This incredible accomplishment contributed hugely to much of Tally Hall’s initial success, and “Good Day” (best song in the damn country 2k04!!!) was later rightly promoted as Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum’s lead single. By far his most notable early achievement, though, was the award he won in 2004 for his song “Good Day,” as recorded by Tally Hall for Complete Demos- the national grand prize in the BMI John Lennon Songwriting Contest, which came with a scholarship of $10,000 and was personally presented to him by Yoko Ono herself.
Toy Orchestra performs an original Horowitz composition at the Blind Pig in April 2005.Īndrew, along with being a proficient and talented musician and composer, also won awards for his writing while in college, racking up two prestigious Hopwood Awards for fiction and poetry. He dabbled in many other musical side projects during college, such as the 30-piece experimental sing-along band Toy Orchestra, which also included Rob and Zubin, and the hip-hop/classical mashup collective The Baker Bros. Probably the only member of Tally Hall who entered college knowing for sure that he wanted to become a musician, Andrew double-majored in music composition and English at University of Michigan, in the same year as Joe and Rob (class of ‘05). According to his website bio circa 2004, he began playing piano at age 5 and composing his own music at age 8, and during high school he was involved in youth symphonies and attended the Interlochen summer music program.
